Trip essentials

Start & finish
Starts in Baku (Azerbaijan) · Ends in Yerevan (Armenia)
Local currency
Three currencies: Azerbaijani manat (AZN), Georgian lari (GEL), and Armenian dram (AMD)
Cards & cash
Cards work well in Baku, Tbilisi, and Yerevan; carry local cash in Svaneti, Kakheti, and Tatev. Change money in each country: the currencies do not cross borders. You can bring US dollars in cash to exchange for local currency at banks or authorized exchange offices on arrival, before visiting remote areas. Bring notes in good condition and check exchange opening hours and requirements.
Physical demand
Medium — a long 21-day route with road transfers of up to 8 hours and short walks in Gobustan, Ushguli, and the monasteries
Coffee reference
Cappuccino: about AZN 5 in Baku (~€2.70 euros), GEL 8 in Tbilisi (~€2.70 euros), and AMD 1,200 in Yerevan (~€2.80 euros)

Flavours of the Caucasus

Khinkali — Flavours of the Caucasus

Khinkali

Broth-filled Georgian dumplings, eaten by hand and never with a fork.

Azerbaijani plov — Flavours of the Caucasus

Azerbaijani plov

Saffron rice with dried fruit and lamb, a celebration dish.

Georgian qvevri wine — Flavours of the Caucasus

Georgian qvevri wine

Fermented underground in clay amphorae, the world’s oldest documented winemaking method.

Georgia has made wine the same way for 8,000 years: grape, amphora, earth. Drunk on a journey through futuristic Baku, Georgian monasteries and ancient Armenian temples, that wine tells the story of a crossroads between empires better than any guidebook.
