01 — THE TRIP

Northern Norway during peak aurora season: husky sledding, whale safaris, and winter landscapes that look painted.

We arrive in Tromsø when the sun barely rises — the polar darkness that makes it possible to see auroras on almost any clear night. It's also the season when whales enter the northern fjords following the herring, and when there's already enough snow on the ground for the landscape to feel like real winter, not a catalogue postcard.

02 — WHAT'S COVERED

Included

  • 7 hotel nights in double or triple occupancy
  • 7 buffet breakfasts
  • Private transport for the whole route outside Tromsø
  • Northern lights dinner cruise on the Tromsø fjord
  • Whale watching by catamaran
  • Polar Park entrance
  • Wandernow ambassadors / guides accompanying the group
  • Advice for your flights

Luggage: Due to vehicle capacity, each traveler may bring only one suitcase of up to 15 kg and one backpack. Any additional luggage is the traveler's responsibility and must be handled on their own, for example by leaving it at the base hotel, subject to the hotel's availability.

Not included

  • International flights
  • Tips for guides
  • General meals (suggested budget: €80.00 euros/day)
  • Optional activities (husky sledding, snowshoeing, Sami farm)

Groups of maximum 16 travelers, ages 6 to 100. Every trip has different physical requirements, so if a minor joins, they should be an independent kid who enjoys being outdoors — not one glued to an iPad all day. Solo travelers are welcome: we pair men with men and women with women in double or triple occupancy.

International flights are not included unless expressly stated on the trip page.

International community

You travel with people from all over the world

On any given departure you may share the route with travelers from Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Spain and other countries. We don't sell tours: we offer guided adventure trips, run in Spanish, in small groups of maximum 16 people.

  • International groups: depending on the date, travelers from different Spanish-speaking countries may join
  • A Spanish-speaking Wandernow guide throughout, plus local guides (in English, sometimes Spanish) who add the local perspective
  • We don't sell tours: we offer guided adventure trips, in Spanish, in small groups of maximum 16 people.

Available optional activities

Three ways to experience northern winter a little more closely.

Husky sled ride in snowy Norway

Husky sled ride

Cross snowy landscapes behind an energetic team of huskies.

The same mushing tradition northern breeders have used for centuries to travel in winter, adapted so you can live it too — riding a sled pulled by trained dogs over real November snow, guided by someone who does it every day.

from €190.00 euros per person

Travelers snowshoe hiking in northern Norway

Snowshoe hike

Walk through deep snow, forests and Arctic mountains.

The oldest way to walk on deep snow without sinking, long before skis existed. A guided hike through Arctic forest, in silence, with no previous experience needed.

from €160.00 euros per person

Reindeer at a Sami farm in northern Norway

Reindeer farm and Sami culture

Meet the reindeer and discover the living traditions of the Sami people.

A visit to a Sami farm — the indigenous people who have herded reindeer in the Norwegian Arctic for generations. You meet the family, see the reindeer up close and hear first-hand what that way of life is like today, not a historical reenactment.

from €190.00 euros per person

These activities can be added once your trip is booked. Reference prices, subject to confirmation before departure.

Why travel with us?

  • No more than 16 travelers—never a tour bus.

  • A Wandernow guide with you throughout the journey.

  • International groups—you meet people from other countries along the way.

  • We don't sell tours ruled by a fixed schedule: the best part of a journey is often what wasn't planned. If you know how to let go and flow, this trip is for you.

03 — ROUTE

Route

Itinerary day by day

  1. Day 1

Tromsø · Traveller welcome · Check-in at the host hotel at 2:00 pm and a short trip briefing

The meeting point is the Arctic capital, a city that lives half the year in darkness and has learned to turn that into a celebration, not a sentence. Storgata, the street where you walk on your free afternoon, is where locals solve the same dilemma you do: what to do when the sun leaves at 2pm.

  2. Day 2

Tromsø · Whale watching · Morning departure for an approximately 8-hour whale-watching boat…

We head out to the fjord in search of whales — orcas and humpbacks that arrive in November chasing the herring, one of the largest concentrations of the year. It's not a guaranteed show; it's real wildlife following its food, just as we follow ours.

  3. Day 3

Narvik · Polar Park · Departure with luggage for Narvik, stopping at Polar Park to see…

Along the way, Polar Park: the chance to see up close species that in the wild almost never show themselves — wolves, lynx, bears, reindeer. It's the only point of the trip where the Arctic comes close instead of hiding.

  4. Day 4

Svolvær / Lofoten · Departure with luggage for the Lofoten archipelago

Arriving in Lofoten is entering the territory that made Norway famous before oil did: cod. The archipelago has lived on stockfish since the Viking age — fish dried in the Arctic wind, hung on wooden racks all along the coast. The Viking settlement museum tells that same story from its very origin.

  5. Day 5

Lofoten · Archipelago landscapes · A day exploring the archipelago's most iconic landscapes and places

A free day for the landscapes that made Lofoten an icon — peaks that fall straight into the sea. It's also where it's worth trying skrei (the winter-season Arctic cod) or reindeer, two of the flavours that define northern cuisine — not as a curiosity but as what people here really eat in November.

  6. Day 6

Malangsfjorden · Northern fjords · A road day through the fjords of northern Norway

A road day through the fjords, unhurried. It's the kind of day that looks like "transfer time" on the itinerary but is often the one people remember most — pure landscape, no packed agenda.

  7. Day 7

Tromsø · Farewell dinner · Return to Tromsø with luggage

We close where we began, with a farewell dinner and the Aurora Dinner Cruise — dining while waiting for the aurora is almost an Arctic tradition in itself: eating well while the sky decides whether to open.

  8. Day 8

Departure · Tromsø · Farewell and check-out before 12:00 pm

Check-out and farewell. No ceremony — the journey has already been told in the seven days before.

*Wandernow reserves the right to modify the itinerary without prior notice to ensure the safety of the group and the smooth operation of the trip.

Flavours of Norway

Norwegian cod (torsk) — Flavours of Norway

Norwegian cod (torsk)

Fish from Arctic waters, the foundation of centuries of Viking trade and preservation.

Reindeer — Flavours of Norway

Reindeer

Traditional meat of the Sámi people and their Arctic herding culture.

Norwegian aquavit — Flavours of Norway

Norwegian aquavit

A spiced spirit traditionally matured in barrels during an ocean voyage.

In northern Norway beneath the aurora, Sámi food tells a story of thousands of years alongside reindeer and extreme cold. Tasting it in Tromsø is not just another dish on the itinerary; it is a glimpse into an Indigenous culture still alive within the Arctic Circle.

COLD-WEATHER GEAR

What to pack for the Arctic

Seeing the aurora in Iceland, Norway, Finland or Greenland can mean standing still, at night, outdoors, in wind and temperatures down to −20 °C. It is not the cold that ruins it: it is dressing badly.

1. Layers, layers and more layers

Arctic layering system with thermal base, fleece, down and waterproof shell
  • A thermal base that wicks moisture (merino or synthetic, never cotton), an insulating mid layer (fleece or light down) and a windproof, waterproof shell. Three layers you can open and close as you move.

2. Extremities first

  • Thin liner gloves and thick waterproof mittens

Two-piece gloves: a thin liner for your phone and a thick mitten over it.

  • Winter hat, neck buff and balaclava

A hat covering the ears plus a buff or balaclava.

  • Wool socks and waterproof insulated winter boots

Wool socks (one good pair, not two thin ones) and waterproof insulated boots.

  • Thermal leggings and waterproof outer trousers

Thermal trousers under a waterproof outer layer.

3. Details that save the night

  • Chemical hand and foot warmers for extreme cold

Chemical hand and foot warmers: weightless and last hours.

  • Insulated thermos and cup for a hot drink

A thermos with a hot drink.

  • Rugged power bank charging a phone

A power bank: cold drains phone and camera in minutes.

  • Head torch with red-light mode

A head torch with red light so you do not ruin the group's night vision.

4. Dress for the tripod

Insulated outer layer beside a camera and tripod for aurora photography
  • If you plan to photograph, add one more layer than you think you need: shooting the aurora means standing still for an hour. What keeps you warm walking will not keep you warm waiting.
