01 — THE TRIP

The land of fantasy. Finnish Lapland, Northern Lights, reindeer, snowmobiles, and nights in glass cabins.

It's the winter solstice week — the darkest days of the year in Lapland, with only a few hours of blue light and very long nights, ideal for auroras. It's also when the snow is already firm and deep, the condition snowmobiles, reindeer sleds and husky sleds need to work for real, not as a rehearsal over thin snow. And it coincides, not by chance, with the week when Rovaniemi officially becomes the town of Santa Claus.

03 — ROUTE

Route

Itinerary day by day

  1. Day 1

Rovaniemi · Arrival · Meeting at the assigned hotel at 2:00 pm for the briefing and group…

Welcome briefing and group dinner. The first night in Lapland is usually the first time someone watches snow fall under an almost black sky at 3 in the afternoon — it takes your body clock a day to accept that this is how the whole week will be.

  2. Day 2

Rovaniemi · Santa Claus Village · A day at Santa Claus Village: winter attractions at your own pace…

Santa Claus Village, right on the Arctic Circle. Beyond the Christmas myth, it's the only exact point on the planet where you can stand with one foot in each hemisphere of light — to the north, near-permanent darkness; to the south, there's still sun.

  3. Day 3

Rovaniemi · Snowmobiles and huskies · A big winter day: snowmobile ride and husky sledding…

Snowmobile and husky sled, the two means of transport actually used in Lapland when the road disappears under the snow. This isn't theme-park activity — it's how people move around here in winter.

  4. Day 4

Rovaniemi · Sirkka / Levi · We transfer to the Levi ski village to ski or snowboard under the…

We move on to Levi, Europe's northernmost ski resort. The terrain shifts from flat forest to hills — the Lapland you ski, not only the one you walk.

  5. Day 5

Sirkka / Levi · More winter activities: reindeer sleigh ride and go karts on snow…

Reindeer sledding, the animal that has been transport, food and symbol of Lappish culture for generations. The reindeer on the table that night —smoked, as sausage or grilled— isn't an exotic dish for tourists: it's the protein that has sustained the region's diet since always.

  6. Day 6

Sirkka · Levi · Rovaniemi · A slow morning and the drive back to Rovaniemi

The return, unhurried. The last stretch of road through snowy forest, with no packed agenda, to take in the week before saying goodbye.

  7. Day 7

Rovaniemi · End of trip · Check-out at 11:00 with breakfast included

Check-out at 11:00 with breakfast included. An unhurried farewell, with the cold still in your memory.

Flavours of Finland

Lohikeitto — Flavours of Finland

Lohikeitto

Creamy salmon and potato soup, Finland’s answer to the cold.

Poronkäristys — Flavours of Finland

Poronkäristys

Thinly sliced sautéed reindeer with mashed potato, a traditional Lapland dish.

Glögi — Flavours of Finland

Glögi

Hot spiced wine, the quintessential Christmas drink of the winter season.

In Lapland, with snow covering everything and polar night shortening the days, warm glögi between your hands is as much part of the ritual as seeing the aurora. The season shapes the table: thick soups, reindeer and warming spices, all imagined for a cold that summer erases.

COLD-WEATHER GEAR

What to pack for the Arctic

Seeing the aurora in Iceland, Norway, Finland or Greenland can mean standing still, at night, outdoors, in wind and temperatures down to −20 °C. It is not the cold that ruins it: it is dressing badly.

1. Layers, layers and more layers

Arctic layering system with thermal base, fleece, down and waterproof shell
  • A thermal base that wicks moisture (merino or synthetic, never cotton), an insulating mid layer (fleece or light down) and a windproof, waterproof shell. Three layers you can open and close as you move.

2. Extremities first

  • Thin liner gloves and thick waterproof mittens

Two-piece gloves: a thin liner for your phone and a thick mitten over it.

  • Winter hat, neck buff and balaclava

A hat covering the ears plus a buff or balaclava.

  • Wool socks and waterproof insulated winter boots

Wool socks (one good pair, not two thin ones) and waterproof insulated boots.

  • Thermal leggings and waterproof outer trousers

Thermal trousers under a waterproof outer layer.

3. Details that save the night

  • Chemical hand and foot warmers for extreme cold

Chemical hand and foot warmers: weightless and last hours.

  • Insulated thermos and cup for a hot drink

A thermos with a hot drink.

  • Rugged power bank charging a phone

A power bank: cold drains phone and camera in minutes.

  • Head torch with red-light mode

A head torch with red light so you do not ruin the group's night vision.

4. Dress for the tripod

Insulated outer layer beside a camera and tripod for aurora photography
  • If you plan to photograph, add one more layer than you think you need: shooting the aurora means standing still for an hour. What keeps you warm walking will not keep you warm waiting.
