01 — THE TRIP

Explore Iceland during peak Northern Lights season: frozen waterfalls, ice caves, volcanoes, and glaciers in an unparalleled winter experience.

Iceland at these dates is the island in its darkest, most volatile version — a clear sky shows auroras on almost any night, and the sustained cold is exactly what makes it possible to enter a blue ice cave: they form and become safe to visit only when the glacier has spent months freezing with no thaw in between.

  • Northern lights hunting
  • Glacier hike in Skaftafell
  • Night boat for northern lights viewing
  • Private transport throughout the trip
  • Wandernow guides and advice for your flights

Not included

  • Flights
  • Tips for guides
  • Meals (suggested budget: €80.00 euros/day)
  • Optional extra activities

Groups of maximum 16 travelers, ages 6 to 100. Every trip has different physical requirements, so if a minor joins, they should be an independent kid who enjoys being outdoors — not one glued to an iPad all day. Solo travelers are welcome: we pair men with men and women with women in double or triple occupancy.

International flights are not included unless expressly stated on the trip page.

International community

You travel with people from all over the world

On any given departure you may share the route with travelers from Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Spain and other countries. We don't sell tours: we offer guided adventure trips, run in Spanish, in small groups of maximum 16 people.

  • International groups: depending on the date, travelers from different Spanish-speaking countries may join
  • A Spanish-speaking Wandernow guide throughout, plus local guides (in English, sometimes Spanish) who add the local perspective
  • We don't sell tours: we offer guided adventure trips, in Spanish, in small groups of maximum 16 people.

Available optional activities

Four ways to get even closer to Iceland's ice, water and land.

Snorkeling in the Silfra fissure, Iceland

Silfra snorkeling, Thingvellir National Park

Float between two continents in glacial water with endless visibility.

You literally float between two continents, in glacial meltwater so filtered by volcanic rock that visibility is almost infinite — among the clearest waters on the planet.

from €195.00 euros per person

Inside a blue ice cave in an Icelandic glacier

Ice cave

Step into a blue vault carved by meltwater inside the glacier.

A blue vault that only exists a few months a year, carved by the previous summer's melt and frozen over again. Every season is a different cave — the one you see will never exist the same way again.

from €215.00 euros per person

Blue geothermal water among volcanic rock in Iceland

Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon (entry)

Warm geothermal water among volcanic rock and steam.

Geothermal water above 37°C in the middle of volcanic landscape — the same energy from the earth that heats every home in Iceland, here turned into a natural spa.

from €195.00 euros per person

Aerial view of Vatnajökull glacier from a scenic flight in Iceland

Scenic flight by small plane or helicopter

Board a small plane with panoramic windows from the airstrip beside Skaftafell National Park and see Iceland as few people do: Vatnajökull glacier, ice fields, glacial rivers and volcanic terrain from the air. A perspective no hike can give you.

Vatnajökull, the glacial rivers and the volcanic lands seen from the air — the only way to grasp the island's true scale in a single view.

from €210.00 euros per person

These activities can be added once your trip is booked. Reference prices, subject to confirmation before departure.

Why travel with us?

  • No more than 16 travelers—never a tour bus.

  • A Wandernow guide with you throughout the journey.

  • International groups—you meet people from other countries along the way.

  • We don't sell tours ruled by a fixed schedule: the best part of a journey is often what wasn't planned. If you know how to let go and flow, this trip is for you.

03 — ROUTE

Route

Itinerary day by day

  1. Day 1

Reykjavik · Group welcome and reception

The starting point is the northernmost capital in the world, a small city built literally on lava. The welcome briefing sets the tone: here the landscape isn't a backdrop, it's the protagonist.

  2. Day 2

Snaefellsnes Peninsula · Black Church of Budir, Gorge, Arnarstapi, Londrangar…

We walk over the remains of recent eruptions — this peninsula is still active, and you can tell. It's the trip's first lesson that Iceland isn't a country that "had" volcanoes, it's one that keeps having them. Kirkjufell, the country's most photographed mountain, crowns a day through fishing villages where lamb and cod are still the base of every meal, just as they have been for centuries — the Icelandic coast never had fertile land to farm, so it learned to live from the sea and from livestock that endures the cold.

  3. Day 3

Golden Circle · Thingvellir National Park, Arctic snorkeling and Secret Lagoon hot…

Thingvellir is where the American and Eurasian tectonic plates drift apart in plain sight, and where the world's first parliament was founded, over a thousand years ago. The Icelandic horses we pass are a breed isolated since Viking times — it has never been crossed with another.

  4. Day 4

Golden Circle · Geysir, Gullfoss and free time or a thermal spa

The historic heart of Iceland: the geysers that gave the word "geyser" to every language. Nearby, rye bread is still baked buried in geothermal ground — the same heat that makes the water jump also bakes the bread.

  5. Day 5

South Coast · Seljalandsfoss and Secret Waterfall, Skogafoss…

Waterfalls and rivers running straight down from the interior glaciers. It's the greenest Iceland on the route — although in deep winter the green turns white.

  6. Day 6

South Coast · Walk to Svartifoss, glacier hike in Skaftafell, Fjallsárlón…

Europe's largest glacier and the black sand beaches it produces — basalt ground down by centuries of waves. Seals pop up in the glacial lagoon here, and this coast is the home of Icelandic lobster, a product that hardly ever leaves these shores.

  7. Day 7

South Coast / Reykjavik · Return to the capital, visiting places missed on the outbound…

On the way back to Reykjavik we visit the places we didn't reach on the way out or repeat the group's favorites: the last day is decided by the island, and by you too.

  8. Day 8

    Reykjavik · Check-out

Check-out and farewell. The journey ends where it began, with the island seen from end to end.

The itinerary order and activities may change due to weather conditions.

The itinerary describes the route and the places you will visit. A place, museum, or activity being mentioned here does not mean its admission or cost is included — only what appears under ‘Included’ is covered. Review that section to see exactly what your trip includes.

Flavours of Iceland

Skyr — Flavours of Iceland

Skyr

Icelandic cultured dairy, thicker than yoghurt and inherited from the Vikings.

Hangikjöt — Flavours of Iceland

Hangikjöt

Lamb traditionally smoked over dried sheep dung, a festive dish.

Brennivín — Flavours of Iceland

Brennivín

Unsweetened Icelandic aquavit, nicknamed “black death”, served with hákarl.

A treeless volcanic island forced Icelanders to preserve everything: fermenting, smoking and drying in Arctic wind. Necessity became identity, and tasting hangikjöt or skyr reveals how a small people survived a thousand years between fire and ice on their own terms.

COLD-WEATHER GEAR

What to pack for the Arctic

Seeing the aurora in Iceland, Norway, Finland or Greenland can mean standing still, at night, outdoors, in wind and temperatures down to −20 °C. It is not the cold that ruins it: it is dressing badly.

1. Layers, layers and more layers

Arctic layering system with thermal base, fleece, down and waterproof shell
  • A thermal base that wicks moisture (merino or synthetic, never cotton), an insulating mid layer (fleece or light down) and a windproof, waterproof shell. Three layers you can open and close as you move.

2. Extremities first

  • Thin liner gloves and thick waterproof mittens

Two-piece gloves: a thin liner for your phone and a thick mitten over it.

  • Winter hat, neck buff and balaclava

A hat covering the ears plus a buff or balaclava.

  • Wool socks and waterproof insulated winter boots

Wool socks (one good pair, not two thin ones) and waterproof insulated boots.

  • Thermal leggings and waterproof outer trousers

Thermal trousers under a waterproof outer layer.

3. Details that save the night

  • Chemical hand and foot warmers for extreme cold

Chemical hand and foot warmers: weightless and last hours.

  • Insulated thermos and cup for a hot drink

A thermos with a hot drink.

  • Rugged power bank charging a phone

A power bank: cold drains phone and camera in minutes.

  • Head torch with red-light mode

A head torch with red light so you do not ruin the group's night vision.

4. Dress for the tripod

Insulated outer layer beside a camera and tripod for aurora photography
  • If you plan to photograph, add one more layer than you think you need: shooting the aurora means standing still for an hour. What keeps you warm walking will not keep you warm waiting.
