A good Patagonia route does not try to see everything. It connects a few strong bases and leaves time to walk: El Calafate for Perito Moreno Glacier, El Chaltén for Fitz Roy trails and Torres del Paine for the vast scale of Chilean Patagonia.
El Calafate and Perito Moreno
El Calafate is the air gateway and logistical base. From there, walkways and viewpoints reveal Perito Moreno's ice front without turning the day into a rushed transfer.
El Chaltén and Fitz Roy
El Chaltén has no airport and connects by road from El Calafate. Its advantage is direct access: several trails begin by town. Weather and wind determine visibility, so a sensible itinerary needs room to adapt.
Crossing to Torres del Paine
Crossing into Chile makes this an international route. Border controls include strict restrictions on animal and plant foods; carry valid documents and no food that may be retained.
