The question always lands in October: "do we join the group departure or do you build us something private?" There is no universal answer, but there is an honest decision table. Here is what actually changes.
Group departure (max. 16 people)
- Per-person price 30% to 45% lower than an equivalent private trip.
- Fixed dates calibrated to solar activity and historically clear nights.
- Social atmosphere: the favourite for solo travelers and young couples.
- Shared itinerary: two or three aurora nights with transfer plan Bs.
Private tailor-made trip
- Departure any day of the season, including anniversaries and long weekends.
- Dedicated vehicle and guide: if the sky clears at 2:40 a.m., you go.
- À la carte lodging: glass-roof cabins, design lodges or ice hotels.
- Your own pace: ideal for honeymoons, families with kids or closed friend groups.
The factor almost nobody weighs: night mobility
Auroras rarely fail for lack of aurora; they fail because of clouds. The one variable you control is how many kilometres you can cover that night to find clear sky. In a group the guide decides by consensus within a fixed margin; privately, you decide. That difference drives the real odds more than anything else.
When we recommend each
- Group: first Arctic winter, defined budget, appetite for meeting people.
- Private: a specific celebration, tight date window, or photographic demands.
- Hybrid: group for the core itinerary, two private nights at the end.
What deciding late costs
Glass-roof cabins and small lodges in Tromsø, Rovaniemi and Abisko sell out six to eight months ahead. Privately, deciding late does not mean missing out: it means paying for the availability that was left. In a group, there simply are no seats.
If your dates are clear but the format is not, message us on WhatsApp with your available days: we will send both quotes side by side, unvarnished.
