It sounds impossible: polar destination, bulky clothing, cabin bag. It works once you stop thinking in garments and start thinking in layers — a few technical pieces that combine with each other.
The three layers
- Base: two merino sets, long sleeve and thermal bottoms.
- Mid: a light fleece plus a packable down jacket.
- Outer: waterproof, windproof shell jacket and trousers.
What actually takes space
Boots and the outer shell are worn on the plane, never packed. That single move frees half the volume.
A short list that works
- 3 pairs of wool socks (never cotton).
- Liner gloves plus thick waterproof gloves.
- Beanie, neck gaiter and sleep mask.
- Compression bags for anything soft.
- Charger, adapter and power bank in your personal item.
What stays home
Big towels, jeans, hairdryer, three pairs of shoes and 'just in case' clothing. In destinations with laundry — Iceland, Norway, Greenland — you wash mid-trip and move on.
Airline warning
Nordic carriers and Arctic domestic flights often enforce stricter weight limits than intercontinental ones. Check the allowance for each leg before packing.
